New Adventure

I have been thinking for a while about the true role of a practitioner who is also a pastor. Often I find myself in the treatment room listening to the heart pain of one of my clients, and I realize that really what they need is a touch from God’s Presence. At these times, I cross easily between realms from the doctor to the minister. Really these distinctions are quite arbitrary and just a product of our fragmented western society. In ancient societies, like that which birthed acupuncture and Chinese medicine, as well as the Biblical setting, the medical and spiritual were all connected and part of the healing process.

The Chinese have a saying that has helped guide me:

The physician who teaches people to sustain their health is the superior
physician. The physician who waits to treat people until after their health is lost is considered to be inferior. This is like waiting until one’s family is

starving to begin to plant seeds in the garden. ~Author unknown, similar to
statement in The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine

Teaching is really what the treatment room is all about. It is probably one of the most important classrooms we will ever attend. Without our health what do we truly have? Once we realize it is the health of our spirit that affects all of our health, then we will begin to deal with roots of our dis-ease.

To that effect, Jesus used stories, what the bible calls parables to illustrate spiritual realities. I have decided to do the same. I will be authoring a series of stories to teach the principles of the five elements of acupuncture and how God designed us to be both strong and weak. His grace, the power to live life is perfected in this very place!

And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.(2Co 12:9)

The Secret to Slowing Down Aging

Aging! Who likes it? Only kids! Once we realize that we can’t do what we used to do, we start looking for ways to slow down aging.  We put creams on our face, take herbs and supplements, avoid sunlight, take yoga and do anything we read about to slow it down.  What if the fountain of youth was already inside of us and we just needed to learn how to tap into it?

There IS a secret to optimizing our youth on the inside of us.  The key is a word rarely used in health pursuits, the word “congruence”!  What do I mean by congruence or being congruent?  Back to the math class, you might have hated, Geometry, you may remember that strange symbol called congruence. Congruence implies an equality between two objects or concepts.  In the same manner, to slow down aging we (object #1) need to become congruent or one with our inner, or what I call ‘elemental’ nature (object #2). Each of us has a true elemental nature, how we were designed to express our uniqueness in life.  Integrating that true nature into our daily lives brings a congruence that produces a more vibrant, energetic, healthy and youthful self.

Most of us, however, lose access to our elemental nature. Dealing with the complexities and traumas of our lives often causes us to develop coping strategies and masks, which hide or disguise our true self the way God created us. Masks or personas require loads of energy to maintain, which greatly accelerates our aging process and leads to disease. For many people, the mask has become who they think they are. For example, someone who is a ‘Wood Element’ type with an inborn tendency to lead, may have experienced a difficult situation or even abuse as a child, which led to a fear of expressing that leadership gift. A mask of hiding out of fear of anger is then developed. Therefore, the conflict (in-congruence) produces stress, which in turn leads to overworked organs, emotions, mental processes, and spiritual burnout. Even our facial muscles and skin reflect the inner condition of our being. All of these are major contributing factors to accelerating the aging process.

Through Classical Acupuncture and the system of the Five Elements (Fire, Earth, Wood, Metal and Water), we help to discover our true nature, how we were created and through that focal point, we establish congruence with that nature and thereby, we nourish our destiny.  It is my life’s work to empower you to be the best you that God created in body, mind, and spirit. As you step into that reality of your true self, you become congruent and peace floods your inner being.

There is no more practical result than being congruent.  You flow smoothly with life because you learn to be you!  The Scripture tells us, that as we think in our heart, we ARE.  By becoming and returning to your elemental nature and thinking congruent with that nature, you live joyful, youthful and vibrant!

How do I become aware of my true nature? An ancient proverb says: ” three great mysteries: air to the birds, water to the fish and man to himself”. The answer is a process with trained mentors who can facilitate and empower you in this process. Often negative emotions, early life memories, and fears can be trapped in the body, thereby inhibiting us from being congruent and at home with ourselves. As one of my teachers many years ago wrote in one of her books “All sickness is home-sickness” (Dianne Connely, PhD). We all were created to return home.

The first step to true healing is to uncover our essential elemental nature and empower the way we were designed.  If you will email me at davidamitts@mac.com, a request for the “Element Discovery Tool”, I will send you FREE the questionnaire which will help uncover your true nature.  Second, if you’ll return the completed questionnaire to me, I will personally evaluate your answers and begin you with some guidelines to living congruently! Looking forward to a younger you!

Why is a Pastor doing Acupuncture?

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. (3 John 1:2 NKJV)

To answer this question, I need to share a little of my own journey to where I am today.  I’ll begin the story in Miami, Florida as a high school student facing the great gulf called becoming someone or doing something.  Like many of my contemporaries the vision ahead was blurry and it was easier to do what felt like fun in the moment, a characteristic of my fire element, of which I was totally unaware.  Despite my lack of clarity, God’s hand was guiding me through this  as He placed mentors in my life who saw for me when I couldn’t see for myself.

One of these men was my high school coach Rich Coyle.  Coach Coyle was from the New England Area and so took my football films and grades and helped open doors to the Ivy League Colleges.  I ended up being recruited and accepted to the top five, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania and Brown.  I chose Harvard with no real plan beyond going.  Sometimes in life, you find yourself in a place so beyond what you expected that you need time to acclimate and see things correctly in order to know the purpose. Thankfully, God positions people to speak into our confusion.

The process of acclimating and figuring out the purpose of a Harvard education in my life took me six years. A wise counselor suggested taking some time away and discovering the purpose my education was going to serve.  This led me to  two years in Gainesville, Florida where I met my beautiful wife Lisa and figured out at least part of the purpose God had for me, that being natural health care.  I returned to Harvard with a entirely new sense of purpose and for the first time in my life, a sense of destiny.

After graduating Harvard University in 1980 with my degree in Psychology and Social Relations, I began my natural health education in California at the Pacific College of Naturopathic Medicine.  This was a complete culture shock for me.  From junk food, mainstream east coast diet and lifestyle to the nature laden ideas and practices of the west coast holistic health community.  These included vegetarianism, eastern meditative practices, energy medicines, yoga, tai chi and a plethora of self healing modalities.  Lisa joined me and we launched into what we now call the New Age.

One shining light that outshone the rest was Classical 5 Element Acupuncture.  I fundamentally know that I am in desperate need of systems in my life.  My fire nature tends to spontaneity and thus is easily distracted.  Classical Five Element Acupuncture provided my passionate soul with a template to view life, healing and people.  Through a series of friendships and what I now know was God directing my steps, I ended up enrolling in the first class of what today is known as the Maryland University of Integrative Health.  I felt for the first time in my life that I was “home”.  I still get teary when I remember the overwhelming sense that “this is what I was created for”.  I have never lost that connection to 5 Element Acupuncture and the beauty of this system of medicine.

My studies were divided between the East Coast in Boston, to the West Coast in the San Francisco Bay area.  Somewhere in the middle of this vortex of new experiences and thought, I managed to propose to my best friend and love, and we returned east to complete my education with a Masters Degree in Acupuncture and begin a new life.  Lisa and I began our married life together in Columbia, MD, home to the University and where we became the blessed carriers of the seed of the life of our eldest son Joshua.  For the testimony of his miraculous birth, I encourage you to go to www.lisamitts.com and read the testimony of God’s saving power and the first time Lisa heard His voice which saved her life and our baby in the womb.

Lisa and I moved to Florida and began the steps that would add the Pastor to ‘AcuPastor’.  We lived in Jacksonville Florida where through a series of relationships, we got involved with the Amway business. Unknown to us was that God would use this business vehicle to introduce Himself to us formally.  With an enthusiasm built out of the vision and dreams of newlyweds we launched ourselves into this new endeavor.  Amway, as most networking companies, are about building teams or groups of entrepreneurs who want to leverage the vehicle to supplement of even replace their primary income.  Our group was composed of our friends who were involved in the same new age interests that we were.  What we all shared was a desire for true success and a love of positive things.

I’ll never forget our first convention November of 1987.  It was at the Opryland hotel in Nashville.  We arrived a little late and the convention was in full swing.  We entered the large ballroom and were greeted with a sea of people and a band playing southern Christian Music.  What hit us even stronger was a Presence.  We later learned that the Presence was God’s Holy Spirit.  But as new agers, we just called it “goodness”.  Whatever it was called, we knew it was a purity and goodness that was absent in all of our wanderings.  Like our ancestors, the Israelites who left Egypt, we were being drawn forward by the cloud of His Glory!

Fast forward 8 months later, Fontainebleau Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida, another convention and we received Jesus as our savior and Lord, at a non-denominational church service.  I was baptized gloriously in the Atlantic Ocean and filled with His Glorious Holy Spirit.  Our lives came into a brilliant focus and our spirits rejoiced as new citizens of the Kingdom of God! Wow!

For the sake of time, I’ll abbreviate the testimony at this point to say that the next 14 years were full of experiencing God in a powerful way, family rejection (because we are both Jewish), (Jesus or Yeshua, His Hebrew name was not “kosher” in our family) building our business and unbeknownst to me, the development of the Pastor calling on my life.  God took me completely out of acupuncture for a season of 12 years and developed the pastoral and prophetic call in me through men of God, such as Paul Zink, Rodney Howard-Browne, and Brig Hart who became my mentors.  Though it was at first difficult to give up a thriving clinic as well as a School of 5 Element Acupuncture that I began in Jacksonville, FL, (many thought I was crazy – how would I support my family?) we learned how to trust His voice and know Him as “Abba” or Daddy, the one who provides for His children. This would be a critical and valuable lesson for us in the years ahead.

Then in 2002 the Lord changed our direction radically by ending the season of business and bringing ministry and acupuncture into the foreground.  He moved our family which had grown to six, to Seattle (another amazing story for another time) and birthed One New Man Ministry, while also reviving my Acupuncture career.  Before we left Jacksonville, He clearly spoke to me to ask Paul Zink to ordain me as a minister of the Gospel. Though the actual term ‘AcuPastor’ wasn’t realized until recently, the reality of it was definitely birthed.

In the next post, I’ll share the story of the warfare with the religious spirit that dominates the health area of the Church and leads thousands to sickness and often even early death.  For now, suffice it say, the Church needs AcuPastor and the spiritual seekers of the new age, need AcuPastor.  Please share this Blog with those you care about as I will be covering in future posts powerful truths of body/mind/spirit as well as Simple Action Steps (“SAS”) that could make THE difference for your overall health.

SAS of today: We are entering into the season of spring.  The Chinese call this the season of Wood because we look to the natural return of the leaves to the woods.  The organs connected with this time of year are the Liver and Gall Bladder and the emotion is anger or frustration.  The organs are affected by the sense of hope and purpose because without that one can become very frustrated and even depressed.

Your assignment, should you accept it, is to think ahead and project the next 1-2 years in your life.  How do you see your future?  What brings you a sense of hope and purpose? What is the plan or do you have one? you Write it out so you can run towards it.

Then the LORD answered me and said, “Record the vision And inscribe it on tablets, That the one who reads it may run. “For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; For it will certainly come, it will not delay.(Habakkuk 2:2-3 NASB)

Water Element-Winter as a picture of Death and Resurrection

The Winter is the Season in Chinese Medicine of the Water Element.  Water is the most primordial element in creation.  Baptism is done in water because immersion in water is symbolic of death and coming out of the water as a picture of resurrection life.  The Ancient Chinese recognized this reality by naming one of the key Water Element Points, the “Gate of Life”.  This point is situated between the 2nd and 3rd Lumbar Vertebrae at the level of the Kidney organ points.  It is used to encourage and support the drive and will to live.

Water is intelligent. Genesis 1 tells us: ” “The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.”  Gen 1:2 (NASB).  This is the creation soup that light would come out of. The next verse says: “Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.”  Gen 1:3 (NASB).  The question hardly anyone asks is why did God’s Spirit hover over the waters before speaking light into existence?

Well I think science has given us a clue.  Scientists have proven that water stores identity.  A group of students took water out of a common container and when they used a dropper to place small drops on slides, the water assumed a unique shape for each student.  No matter how many drops they squirted out, each drop remained the same for each student.  The scientists demonstrated that water acts like a memory storage system which is alive and dynamic. Here’s a short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2R1YJvR7fg

Masuro Emoto in Japan showed by freezing water after it had been exposed to various words that the water changed based on the words and this was captured in photographs.  The word “Love” gives beautiful form: Image result for water crystals japanese scientistThe word, “Kill” gives this crystal:

You can see these at:

http://www.masaru-emoto.net/english/water-crystal.html

Now imagine in your mind’s eye, the Creation event when the Spirit of God is hovering over the water and He who is the Word, speaks Light, which is what He is and the water then records that purity of His Being!

The Apostle John wrote: “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.”  1Jn 1:5 (NASB).  So in a very deep and profound way God who is Light spoke Himself into the creation as the Source of Light and this was recorded in the Water.

All water is forever the same.  Water can neither be created nor destroyed.  It can only be converted to gas or to liquid or to ice.  When the gas, water vapor ascends into the sky and forms clouds, they rain it back to Earth.  When the water freezes, it melts and becomes liquid again.  Water is a constant, eternal.  With this realization comes the thought that all water contains the memory of God Himself.  It has since the beginning contained the thoughts of Light of God. Wow!

Now since our bodies are composed mostly of water, as well as we are birthed in water, and the Scripture tells us that living water can flow in our innermost being, then we are inseparably connected to God through water.  John recorded Jesus who said: “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”  Joh 7:38-39 (NKJV).  The Holy Spirit, who hovered over the waters in the beginning, comes into our hearts when we receive and believe in Jesus and then flows in us as “living water”.  This “living water” speaks to our hearts the eternal message of God.  The cells of our body contain the Eternal sound of God spoken: “Light”!

In Chinese medicine this is expressed as primordial life energy.  The Ancients intuited a depth of understanding that at the root of our health picture is this profound relationship to water.  The organs of water are the bladder and kidneys and they are said to be related to our bone marrow.  The bone marrow is the sea where blood is made, the carrier of life.  The Bible tells us: “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.”  Lev 17:11 (NASB).  So life itself lives in the blood which is controlled by the water.

Likewise, in Chinese medicine, the sense organ of the water element is the ears.  Hearing defines our level of faith in life. The Apostle Paul declares: “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”  Rom 10:17 (NKJV).  So faith is determined by how we hear. Jesus said: “Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.””  Luk 8:18 (NKJV).  So hearing is key to the abundant life!  Since this is affected by the health of the water element in our lives, our very spiritual life is intricately connected with how we care for this important aspect of our health.

Fear is the emotion of water.  Fear is said by many to be the opposite of faith.  When we feel overwhelmed or drowning in the stress of life, this is a cry of our water element for help.  Fear is about magnifying the negative in our lives.  Faith is about magnifying the positive in our life which ultimately is about God and His Love for us.

I know this is all much to think about.  What I want emphasize though is that we are holistic.  There is much more to say about the water element.  The most important though is take care of your water health.   Drink plenty of clean purified water.  Fill yourself with the Word of God and positive faith-filled input, and then speak positive life-giving words.  You water is recording it all and changing based on what you hear and say.  Your very life could depend on it.

Nature Reveals God

“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”  Romans 1:20

Rather than ignoring nature, we should look to nature to understand God. Yeshua AKA Jesus, used nature to explain the operations of the Kingdom. He was the original “rule of law” candidate for the Torah, or Law in our hearts!

He said:

“The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.””  John 3:8

The wind, or ruach in Hebrew, teaches us about the Holy Spirit. Even more, it teaches us how we are to live in the Spirit.

More about that later, but for now, I just want to establish that it is scriptural and normal to biblical thinking to learn of the things of God and the Kingdom through natural manifestations and principles.

The Ancients who brought forth acupuncture studied nature in this way and we have tremendous insights that have not been diminished by the dark ages.  Through the wisdom which is paralleled in the Bible, but shaded by the bias and sometimes outright ignorance of translators, we can learn much about how God designed us, to function.

Let me give you one example of what I am talking about with respect to translator bias and maybe ignorance.  The Hebrew word “kilya” means kidney.  It is translated as kidney many times in terms of the part of the animal to be sacrificed.

“But the fat, the kidneys,(kilya) and the fatty lobe from the liver of the sin offering he burned on the altar, as the LORD had commanded Moses.”  Leviticus 9:10

Yet later in the bible the same word is translated as: mind or reigns

“Oh, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, But establish the just; For the righteous God tests the hearts and minds(kilya).”  Psalms 7:9 NKJV

“Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.(kilya)”  Psalms 7:9KJV

The translators, seeing from a dualism of separation of the mind and body, know that the verse is contextually related to the mind and heart and decide to alter the literal translation and then justify it by calling it “symbolic”.  They cannot conceive in their dualistic reductionist worldview that the kidneys could be connected to the mind.

Modern medicine would agree on the surface with the same conclusion.  BUT when we extend our understanding the kidneys to the adrenal glands which sit on top of the kidneys and we open up to the hormonal world and its affect on our thinking and actions suddenly these artificial distinctions born of ignorance disappear.  Dualism has separated people physically and mentally for so long that we think someone is crazy if they have emotional components to their physical issues.

In this reasoning we are like those who persecuted Copernicus for challenging the prevailing wisdom that the Earth was the center of the universe, an idea full of mathematical errors that needed a new perspective.  He proposed and was attacked for the model of the solar system we have today.

In a similar fashion, Chinese Medicine has never accepted the concept of dualism.  Instead they view correctly that the body and the mind are one.  Oneness should be no surprise to Biblical students but when we live in a dualistic world and it takes intellectual and spiritual honesty to pierce the veil.

Onward and upward! The Ancients mapped out the causes and effects of physical, emotional and mental functioning.  They operated from an educational context believing that people are free agents but they deserve the best information on how to live and manifest abundant health in all areas of life.  Yeshua echoed this when He said:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”  John 10:10.

Our lives are designed for abundance.  The opposite of abundance is lack.  Lack of health and lack of emotional and mental well being are symptoms of poor education.  That’s enough for this blog but next time we will drill deep into the well of wisdom that explains how our bodies minds and emotions map out wellness and dis-ease.

Blessings in Him

Welcome to the exciting new blog of AcuPastor aka David Mitts, EAMP, M.Ac., Pastor

A Blog bringing together the ancient wisdom of Classical Chinese Acupuncture in a Christ-centered way

10417703_10204449116729134_7163630460124526617_n

 Hi, Welcome!

This is my new blog where I assume the identity of AcuPastor!  What exactly is an AcuPastor?  Well I recently treated another pastor with acupuncture, in my “day job” at our One New Man Healing Center, which I love to do.  He has been so positively impacted by the treatments that he introduced me enthusiastically to his staff as his “AcuPastor”!  I loved it!  I am the only pastor that I know who also practices Classical Chinese Acupuncture  and holistic medicine. I then shared with my beautiful wife, Lisa, about this new identity, and she immediately said to me, “you should blog it!”.  So here I am.

What is my objective with this?  Well, as a pastor and health care practitioner since 1983, I have sadly, watched many thousands of Christians suffer from lack of knowledge in their health arena.  The prophet Hosea spoke by the Spirit of the Lord: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. (Hosea 4:6 NAS77).  Sounds pretty bad!  Many Christians have relegated their bodies to the back burner. Their idea of caring for the temple of the Holy Spirit is to stand in a prayer line, read their bible and go to church.  Rejection of knowledge is at the root of many of our modern day ills. I will be using this format and my new “super-hero” identity as AcuPastor to share ancient wisdom and knowledge that has served thousands over the years that I have been helping people.  I will do this to help you and the ones you are called to help!

I also want to have fun here because for a serious type like myself, having fun is super important!!

OK. First bit of knowledge and wisdom to help.  It’s Spring in these parts and probably where you are too.  It’s time to clean out and reboot!  Yes I said REBOOT.  Our organs need a REBOOT!  The Liver and Gall Bladder are the organs associated with the season of Spring.  They are affected by toxins and poor diet, which we all know is called the S.A.D, or Standard American Diet (and it is SO sad!).  Today, 1 out 3 people are dying from heart disease.  Diabetes is exploding with over 25% of all seniors being diagnosed with this serious condition. With nearly 70% of all Americans reporting as overweight or obese, as well as children’s diabetes and obesity on the rise, it’s definitely time for a Reboot!

How?  Well I’m glad you asked!  No beating around the proverbial bush for you!  As a health care professional, I use what I believe to be the best for me and my family: the Evolv Health Reboot KIT. It’s so simple and designed to get your body REBOOTED in 28 days! This protocol is easy to follow, tastes great and is inexpensive.  Here’s what it does: because of our SAD, many of us have a turned-off hormone receptor site in our brains, called the Leptin receptor.  This hormone, Leptin is a fat feedback cycle hormone.  Leptin tells your brain to activate the fat burning metabolism.  This hormone site gets deactivated when we eat low fat high sugar diets and experience stress and inflammation.  If you have pain in your body, it is probably diminished.  The REBOOT system reactivates the receptor and you are burning fat again, losing unnecessary weight and getting healthier! You simply replace money you are spending on SAD choices and boom! Your fat burning hormone, Leptin is rebooted!  If you want to get more info on how it exactly works go here and watch Dr. Ann Smith: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CquVTA04ctk.

Afterwards message me since you’ll want to get started.  Stay tuned as I share insights and understanding in many areas, both as an acupuncturist and as a pastor, or if you like….. (drum roll, please)…..ACUPASTOR!  Well see ya next time, here at AcuPastor.com!!!!

Blessings on you and your health, spirit-soul-body!
